Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Type 2 (HER2) is a protein that occurs on the surface of cells of numerous organs in the human body. In about 20 % – 30 % of women with breast cancer, the HER2 receptor is over-expressed (HER2Receptor positive), i. e. there are approximately 10 to 100 times as many of these receptors on the cell surface. Over-expression of the receptors means that signal transduction is enhanced, which results in accelerated tumour cell division. If there is no over-expression of HER2 receptors, this is referred to as HER2Receptor negative
